ParentsFrequently Asked Questions
- Where is the Delta Tau Delta House located?
- Unlike some other larger universities which have greeks located off campus, all fraternities and sororities at IIT reside on campus. The quad is in the south-east corner of campus, across 33rd from McCormick Student Village. There are six fraternity houses and two sorority houses on the quad while a few others reside in the dormitories. With such a small campus, the greek houses are just minutes away from any academic building.
- Are the members of the house still on the school's food plan?
- No. Each greek chapter has their own kitchen and Chef who provides meals throughout the school year. Our chapter employs Laura Giudici, a graduate of Illinois Institute of Art with Honors, to provide all food services as well as 10 hot meals during the week. Breakfast is provided in a continental fashion, with a lunch and dinner served Monday through Friday. This compares to the food plan of 14 meals a week, whether hot or cold, the school offers but at a much higher price. The greatest benefit is that the house can control what the menu consists of as well as having Laura cater to special dietary needs (such as vegetarians or the rare dairy allergies) with ease.
- How much does the chapter cost and how are payments collected?
- Costs: about $5000 a year
- Each semester the Treasurers work out a budget and collect accordingly. The costs associated are collected much like rent; bills are issued four times a semester on the 1st of their respective months. Because of the time school starts each semester, September through December are billed as well as Feburary through May. The chapter issues and collects these bills by the policy of 1-10-15-30 set out by Delta Tau Delta's Central Office. Bills are issued on the 1st of the month and are due by the 10th. If it is not turned in by the 10th a 10% fine will be issued. If the bill is still not resolved by the 15th, the member can be suspended; and if not by the 30th, expelled.
- So the chapter has a Chef and does all these extra activities, how is it cheaper than other campus residences?
- Even though it doesn't realistically seem that living in the house could be cheaper, there is no doubt about it. The major difference between the residence halls and our shelter is building and staff costs. While a Chef may seem to be much fancier than a cafeteria, it is actually much simpler. It is much more efficient for us to pay one employee to prepare the food rather than having 30 workers prepare 10 alternative meals everyday, clean the dishes, and take care of the dining room. We wash our own dishes and take care of our own equipment, reducing the cost substantially. This is also a good example of how our building costs are lower. By taking care of our own shelter, we don't have to pay cleaning services or other works to take care of the property. The house is pretty much our own and we take pride in taking care of it.
- How do the chapter payments work when the student is on a scholarship or a loan?
- When members of the chapter are on a Room & Board scholarship, the Treasurers work with the greek advisor and the school to utilize the funds. Normally, the school pays the house these scholarships in one giant check, which takes care of those member's semester bills. Often, however, the scholarships do not arrive until a month or so into school. Late fees are not charged to members who have these scholarships. Loans are slightly different. The school does not issue loan payments to the chapter like the scholarships. They normally cut a check to the student or parents who then can use that money to pay off the house bill costs for the semester. Because the chapter Treasurers cannot driectly control this, late fees will still be assessed even if the loan is taking time to transfer. However, to avoid this fine, members just need to fill out a petition form to remiss the 10% fine for that period. The petition form is mearly a promissory note for the house.
- How to payments work when the payment needs to be mailed from home?
- Many students have their parents send checks from home. The problem is that the check may not arrive by the 10th of the month. In this case, the member should fill out a petition explaining that the check will arrive a few days late. If parents would like a copy of the monthly statement, please tell the member of the house to have the Treasurers to email a copy to him so he may inturn forward it to his parents.
- Make checks payable to: Delta Tau Delta Gamma Beta
- What happens over breaks and the summer?
- Over fall, Christmas, and spring break, members are not forced to leave as they may from other campus residences or pay extra living costs. Living over these breaks does not cost the member anything except for the fact that there is no food service from our Chef. Residing in the house over the summer is possible but costs extra to cover shelter costs and bills. It is normally no more than $500 for the whole summer; but again there is no food service. For those who do go home, they may be required to remove their belongings from their rooms but, unlike the residence halls, do not have to take it all back home. There are common storage areas to store belongings for the summer months which eases much of the move-in hassles.
